Topaz Labs has recently introduced four new software products that have been subjected to from many thousands to reportedly millions of test images and has “taught” the software to produce results that users would want to make workflow more efficient. I think of it as micro compositing.Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the latest buzzword in the image enhancement lexicon. While the purpose of Topaz AI is corrective, it’s creating false detail that was never present.

Personally I wouldn’t use AI repair programs on images intended for a documentary/journalism/science/educational purpose.

Even if topaz AI fails, I’d still keep the image around because improvements in algorithms might mean that in a few years a better version will be able to fix the problem.

Don’t immediately throw out a technically unsuable image because it may be fixable with Topaz AI or similar program.

Overall I’d consider keeping Topaz as an option. The existing sharpening/noise reduction algorithms in LR/PS are generally better behaved and less likely to create something crazy.

Sometimes it creates funky artifacts so you always have to examine the image at 100%.

You might need to tweak the settings for different portions of the image and run it multiple times and piece together the best parts from each.

It doesn’t always work so you have to use layer masks to bring in portions selectively and possibly at partial strength.

Parts look like there was a double image (like you did a long exposure and bumped the tripod in the middle).įinally as I was playing with the different modes and parameter settings, I found that Topaz can create completely false textures. If you push up the Sharpness setting to 100%, you get weird looking artifacts and it’s still not usuable. Basically the source was too blurry for Topaz to reconstruct realistically. The third crop shows a failed reconstruction. Using this at maybe 1/2 or 1/4 strength would probably be optimal.

The output from Topaz is oversharpened in my opinion. The next image shows what happens on an area that was fine in the before picture. Topaz took a blurry source and corrected it with natural looking detail. The original image is on the left and Topaz Sharpen AI on the right (stabilize mode at 50% with 25% noise reduction). Keep in mind if you are looking at this on a normal screen the crops would correspond to a 70+ inch print.įirst, lets look at the back left corner. There’s a lot of different options in Topaz and it doesn’t provide much guidance on how to set them, so basically I had to use trial and error to choose the parameters.

So I downloaded the Sharpen AI program and ran it over the entire image. While it looks fine at web resolution, the image is too soft and I’d normally throw this out but thought I might be able to fix it with Topaz. I had one landscape photo which I took at f/4 by accident instead of f/11 resulting in way too shallow a depth-of-field and having parts of the background and foreground be too blurry and much softer than I would like. But in practice, I find that sometimes it’s like magic and other times it produces garbage.
